Chavez defeated - they voted for George Bush!
As you know, TombWatch was supposed to be going into semi retirement. We still plan to, but we would be failing in gloating duties if we didn't point out that, on top of everything I listed previously, that a defeat for the dictator Chavez is a great note to go out on.
He tried every trick in the book to con voters into making him president for life, including shutting down opposition TV stations and whipping up supporters into a frenzied state of anti American paranoia not seen in our life times; he said voting 'no' was a vote for George Bush and would endorce an American invasion, and said this is why he has been training the army to fight a civil war. But due to the predictable food shortages due to his Mugabe style price control policies, and the increasing awareness amongst his people that democracy was under threat like never before, even the fatwa style obligation his goons always use to get out the vote in his strong holds wasn't enough to get a majority.
There is strong speculation that he may resign within 24 hours (I doubt he will), given the hints he made that he would if he lost during the campaign - that's how big a defeat this is. Certainly this is a turning point for his regime whatever he does.
Venezuela, the region and the wider world - lets not forget his support for the axis of evil and his meddling in the internal affairs of foreign countries - is a safer place today because of this result. A dictator has been faced down and the Tomb has paid a terrible price for it. Let this be a lesson to them.
Update:
The Guardian have egg on their faces too. They changed the early edition, which gave a neutral report, to a report that stated he looked set to win.

Er, how can he be a 'dictator' as he has allowed himself to be bound by the result? I don't particularly like Chavez- he is far too populist for my tastes. Governments should be as small and as impotent as possible so anyone who seeks to increase their remit is pretty suspect. But the hysterical nonsense spouted about him by the usual pro-US nutters is unbelievable. Do get a sense of proportion, or seek psychiatric help, whichever costs my taxes the least.
Stephen, Chavez is more of a wannabe dictator than an actual dictator. Luckily the public saw sense before it was too late...
lenin has reached a new all-time low.
While he steadfastly refuses to distance himself from terrorist bombings, with impeccable timing, he launches into an attack on the United Nations.
Now, let's be clear. I'm not saying I disagree with everything he writes - the UN does indeed act as a tool of the major powers (though not just the US, nor even just "the west" - China and Russia are also permanent members of the UNSC, for example).
However the timing of this article is quite clearly designed to mitigate and excuse the appalling AQ bombing in Algiers.
ALL terrorist bombings are reactionary. No ifs, no buts, no excuses. The victims invariably include innocent people who are just doing their jobs.
No one can be left in any doubt that lenin and his goons are total shits who have a deep-seated hatred and contempt for working people.

Dear neocon blogger.
Thanks for unveiling your fondness for yourself, and your support for the US dictatorship.
Enough said.
Venezuela has one of the most modern and transparent electoral systems in the world.
In several European countries, there are no term limits. In the US, term limits came about because if Franklin Roosevelt's popularity. hardly a step to dictatorship.
I expect the issue to be brought up again, near 2011 when Chavez's term draws near the end. Even though there are plenty of problems with the Chavez movement, the opposition has no redeeming quality.
I found this blog surfing. Lenin hates my blog I believe. I have both agreements and disagreements with them.
I'm not being sarcastic. I think if you define yourself by what you are against, will deliver yourself to history's dustbin.
Hello I just entered before I have to leave to the airport, it's been very nice to meet you, if you want here is the site I told you about where I type some stuff and make good money (I work from home): here it is
